About Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976 as a grassroots movement driven by a simple but powerful belief: everyone deserves a safe, decent, and affordable place to live. Today, Habitat has grown into a leading global nonprofit serving communities in more than 70 countries.
Habitat partners with families and individuals in need of a hand-up — not a handout — to build homes they can call their own. Through financial support, land donations, volunteer service, and advocacy for affordable housing, people from all walks of life come together to help families achieve the strength, stability, and self-reliance needed to build better futures.

Lancaster/Northumberland Habitat for Humanity
Lancaster/Northumberland Habitat for Humanity was established in 1998 as the local Habitat affiliate serving our community. Since then, we have built 22 homes and supported hundreds of local families through affordable housing opportunities and community partnerships.
Our work is made possible through the generous support of:

- And our Habitat ReStore on Main Street in Kilmarnock
Our organization is guided by a dedicated working Board of Directors made up entirely of volunteers who generously contribute their time, skills, and leadership. We are deeply grateful to the many individuals who have served on our Board and helped shape our mission since 1998.
Our ReStore
The Lancaster/Northumberland Habitat ReStore opened in 2015 and has become a cornerstone of our success. The store was recently recognized with 3rd Place Most Profitable ReStore in a Small Population Area in Virginia — an achievement we are incredibly proud of.
This success has a powerful impact on our mission. Because the ReStore covers our administrative and operating expenses — including insurance, rent, utilities, technology, supplies, and staffing — every donated dollar to Habitat goes directly toward building homes.
Even more exciting, the ReStore operates at a profit, meaning it not only sustains our operations but also helps fund the construction of new Habitat homes.
Periodic Newsletter
The Lancaster/Northumberland Habitat for Humanity publishes a quarterly newsletter called the Hammer to keep our community connected and informed. Each issue features a message from our President, stories highlighting local housing needs, spotlights on our dedicated volunteers, updates on recent and upcoming events, and much more.
