Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply for a Habitat home?

Families and individuals in need of decent, affordable housing apply for homeownership with their local Habitat for Humanity.

Each local Habitat’s family selection committee selects homeowners based on three criteria:

  • The applicant’s level of need
  • Their willingness to partner with Habitat
  • Their ability to repay a mortgage through an affordable payment plan

As part of their willingness to partner, Habitat’s homebuyers are required to perform sweat equity.  Sweat equity is the time homebuyers invest by helping build homes, attending required classes and volunteering with Habitat.

Is a Habitat home free?
No. Homeowners purchase their homes with an affordable, no-profit mortgage and make monthly payments.

How much does a Habitat home cost?
Habitat homes are sold at cost with an affordable, no-profit mortgage. Monthly payments are designed to be affordable for the homeowner.

Do I need good credit to qualify?
No. Habitat looks at overall financial stability, not credit scores alone. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to manage monthly payments and work toward financial readiness.
